Internal Consultants Now Have Roadmap to Performance

“Internal consultants” –staff members who serve in consultative roles in their organization – face unique challenges in balancing the tension between being knowledgeable insiders and the need to give honest, direct feedback to their clients. Now in its 2nd edition, this book from ATD Press provides a practical, hands-on guide to help internal consultants in any field succeed and cultivate their careers.

Consulting on the Inside, A Practical Guide for Internal Consultants by Beverly Scott and B. Kim Barnes, is a solid resource for internal consultants at all experience levels. Readers will better understand their role and discover many ways to improve their performance and make greater contributions to their organizations. This book includes advice on how to:

  • maintain an outsider’s objectivity while applying an insider’s knowledge of the organization
  • build relationships while being up-front about challenges and issues
  • design a role to fit the client’s needs and the organizational situation
  • handle roadblocks and deal effectively with difficult clients
  • market consulting services within the client organization.

Readers will find a thorough examination of the eight phases of the consulting process, a comprehensive analysis of the differences between internal and external consultants, key skills for success in the internal consulting role and many personal stories and examples from internal consultants in fields ranging from organization development to information technology to marketing.  Consulting on the Inside provides a complete toolbox for getting the job done, including tips and techniques, checklists, forms, sample agreements, and ready-to-use agendas.

Consulting on the Inside is available from ATD Press, the publishing division of the Association for Talent Development (formerly ASTD, American Society for Training & Development).

What Readers Have Said

“This is a great hands-on practical guide from consultants who have “been there, done that” a thousand times. The chapters are well-organized and full of the kind of wisdom we need more of in government as well as private business. As a former state mental health commissioner and current CEO of a governmental non-profit managed care organization, I recommend Consulting on the Inside with great enthusiasm.” Bob Nikkel, MSW, Executive Director, Jefferson Behavioral Health, Oregon

“Very hands on; excellent resource for an internal consulting course we were developing. Very practical and valuable information.” Fred L. Friend

“I enjoyed this book! It was what I needed, when I needed it.”  Jack Bower

“Lets face it, most, if not all, organisations are chaotic. Different perspectives and assumptions makes decision making a living hell.  Consulting on the Inside provides a eye-opening excursion into the attributes of imperfection in business operations and strategic planning. And subsequently create a pool of insights into how management should identify and recreate themselves in both stable and adverse environments. A must read for process planners, black-belts and management advisors.”  A customer
